Crystal Coast Habitat for Humanity, founded in 1988, is part of a global, nonprofit housing organization operated on Christian principles that seek to put God's love into action by building homes, communities, and hope. Crystal Coast Habitat for Humanity serves Carteret and Onslow counties and aims to eliminate substandard housing locally and worldwide through constructing, rehabilitating, and preserving homes; by advocating for fair and just housing policies; and by providing training and access to resources to help families improve their shelter conditions.  It is Crystal Coast Habitat for Humanity's conviction that every man, woman, and child should have a simple, durable place to live in dignity and safety, and that decent shelter in decent communities should be a matter of conscience and action for all.

WHO WE SERVE

Crystal Coast Habitat has an open-door policy. We believe that everyone needs a decent, affordable place to live are welcome to help with the work, regardless of race, religion, age, gender, political views, or any of the other distinctions that too often divide people.  In short, Habitat welcomes volunteers and supporters from all backgrounds and also serves people in need of decent housing regardless of race or religion.  Habitat for Humanity International and its affiliated organizations does not proselytize.  Meaning that Habitat will not offer assistance on the expressed or implied condition that people must either adhere to or convert to a particular faith or listen and respond to messaging designed to induce conversion to a particular faith.

HOW WE WORK

We work by partnering with volunteers, donors, and families in need to build homes and access ramps. Families in need of affordable housing are asked to go through an application process where perspective homeowners demonstrate the ability to pay a no-profit, no-interest mortgage set up through Habitat. This mortgage payment is often less than what the family would pay in rent, making homeownership more accessible. In addition to making mortgage payments, Habitat homeowners are required to contribute sweat equity hours which can come from working alongside our volunteers to build their perspective home, home ownership classes, and a variety of other opportunities. Once the construction process has completed, we hold a home dedication ceremony where the keys to the home are then handed to the new homeowners.

WHY IT MATTERS

Habitat for Humanity helps address the global affordable housing crisis by providing safe and affordable housing solutions to families in need. This is particularly critical in areas where housing costs are rising faster than incomes, leading to housing insecurity and homelessness. Our homeownership program helps families build assets, stability, and independence which can positively effect other areas of their lives including employment opportunities, health, and education. Habitat's home construction projects also contribute to community revitalization by improving neighborhoods and increasing property values. This in turn can help attract further development in the area. Overall, Habitat's work matters because it helps build stronger, more resilient communities, creates pathways to opportunity for families in need, and promotes a world where everyone has a decent place to call home.
